Luigi Mangione, 26, was charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. He was seen near a Port Authority bus station in New York 46 minutes after the shooting before making his way to Pennsylvania where he was eventually arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona. The shooter evaded police for several days in Pennsylvania before being taken into custody. The suspect traveled between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and made stops in between, prompting a plea from state officials to help trace Mangione’s whereabouts.
The suspect was seen on surveillance footage arriving in New York City, taking a cab to the vicinity of the Hilton hotel, staying at a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and walking around in the area before the shooting. He was captured on video both before and after the crime at different locations in the city. In Central Park, ballistic evidence with cryptic messages on ammunition was recovered. Mangione was later arrested in Pennsylvania and charged with multiple offenses including murder, possession of a firearm, forgery, and providing false identification to law enforcement.
Mangione resisted being led into a Pennsylvania courthouse by guards and was denied bail. He stated that he would fight extradition to New York. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and investigators are trying to piece together the suspect’s movements before and after the crime. Thompson’s murder has shocked the community, and a $60,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman.
