Legislative Updates for April 10th

John Watson, a Dothan man and former ALEA employee, was arrested on four counts of dissemination of child pornography. This came after he mailed suspicious letters containing pornographic images to Alabama House members and Governor Kay Ivey. Watson was booked in the Houston County Jail without bond and resigned from his job in lieu of termination. The Alabama Senate also approved a bill banning K-12 students from using cell phones during the school day, with exceptions for certain circumstances. The bill, SB 92, will go to the House for further consideration. This legislation aligns with Gov. Kay Ivey’s priorities, as mentioned in her state of the state address. The bill also requires the state department of education to develop a course on social media safety for students. These legislative developments were reported by Alabama Daily News on April 10.
