Alabama State Police are investigating after suspicious letters containing pornographic images were mailed to members of the Alabama House of Representatives. Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter commended the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for their swift response to the incident. Lawmakers are currently in the midst of their legislative session.
In other legislative news, a bill giving the state superintendent subpoena power was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill would allow the superintendent to compel individuals to testify or hand over records related to inquiries by the Alabama Department of Education.
Additionally, a bill requiring all new public restrooms to install adult-sized changing tables passed the Alabama House in a vote of 93-2. The bill was introduced to help adults with special needs and their caretakers. It will go to the governor’s desk for final approval.
On the other hand, two bills that aimed to protect minors from inappropriate content on cell phones and apps did not receive a vote in the Alabama Senate. The bills, sponsored by Sen. Clyde Chambliss, were delayed for further consideration.
Finally, the House Education Policy committee advanced a bill that expands the ban on gender identity instruction in Alabama public schools. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mack Butler, would prohibit discussions about gender identity or sexual orientation in all grades from pre-K through 12th. The bill will now move to the House floor for further discussion.
