Five-year-old Jacks Benton from the Salem community in Lee County recently won the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association’s Big Buck Photo Contest. Jacks harvested his first buck while hunting on family land in Russell County, following in the footsteps of his father, Brad, who also harvested his first deer on the same property as a child. Out of over 200 entries, Jacks’ photo received the most online votes and was declared the winner.
As the winner, Jacks received a $150 gift card and a copy of “Black Belt Bounty,” a coffee-table book featuring stunning images, wildlife essays, and wild game recipes. Jacks, excited about his win, plans to use his prize money to buy gum and a toy.
According to ALBBAA director Pam Swanner, the high number of entries in the contest demonstrates the excellent whitetail deer hunting opportunities available in Alabama’s Black Belt region. The association’s photo contests aim to showcase the abundant hunting opportunities in the area, and the Big Buck Photo Contest was successful in achieving this goal.
The ALBBAA Best Sporting Dog Contest is still open until March 15, and the annual Big Gobbler Photo Contest will launch later in March as the wild turkey season begins on March 25. The Black Belt region includes 23 counties known for their exceptional hunting and outdoor recreational opportunities.
