Lawsuit disputes the racial unfairness of the Madison County voting map

The Legal Defense Fund and Birmingham-based firm Wiggins, Childs, Pantazis, Fisher and Goldfarb have filed a federal lawsuit against the Madison County Commission for violating the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black voting power. The suit challenges the current “6-1” voting system, which results in white residents holding six of the seven commission seats despite Black residents accounting for 25% of voting-age citizens. Filed on behalf of the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP and two Black voters, the lawsuit seeks to redraw the electoral map to create a second majority-Black district. It aims to give Black voters the opportunity to elect another candidate to the Commission. President of the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, Benard Simelton, emphasized the importance of protecting voting rights in the state. Individual plaintiffs, Veronica Curtis-Richie and Angela Curry, highlighted the unequal political representation faced by the Black community in Madison County. The lawsuit is part of a larger national effort for fair representation and enforcement of voting rights, especially in Southern states. The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Sidney Jackson, stressed the importance of taking action to ensure fairness for Black voters and their voices are heard in the political process. The lawsuit reflects a continued fight for voting rights and fair representation in the state.
