Lab Technology Officially Accepted for Use in US Military Marketplace Website

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Project GeoForce has been pre-approved for deployment by Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, a platform for technology assessed by the Department of Defense for use on U.S. military bases. The project, which includes partners like Anthem Energy Partners and Texas A&M University, aims to provide geothermal energy solutions at a price of less than 8 cents per kilowatt-hour from unconventional hot dry rock geothermal resources. Los Alamos contributed the Geothermal Design Tool (GeoDT) for the project, which allows users to explore new geothermal energy sites and understand the economic potential before breaking ground.

Geothermal energy has the potential to provide cost-efficient energy across the country, but currently only accounts for around 0.4% of American energy. With advancements in technology like GeoDT and hydraulic fracture caging, Los Alamos National Laboratory is leading the way in developing deep geothermal systems. The U.S. Air Force has already shown interest in collaborating with innovative companies to build resilient geothermal technologies at their bases, using private capital instead of taxpayer dollars.

Los Alamos has a long history of advancing geothermal research and development, dating back to the 1970s when they developed the first enhanced geothermal system at the Fenton Hill Observatory in New Mexico. With Project GeoForce and its awardable status with Tradewinds, geothermal energy is set to become more accessible, affordable, and customizable for the U.S. market. Government customers interested in viewing the technology can create an account on the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace website.
