Special counsel Jack Smith is requesting more time from the judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s federal election interference case to propose a timetable for future proceedings after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling. Smith’s office has asked for an extension until August 30 to consult with the Justice Department on the next steps in the case, which focuses on Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump’s attorneys do not object to the request. Trump has pleaded not guilty in the case and is seeking dismissal or delay until after the election. The Supreme Court’s ruling on immunity has affected multiple legal battles against Trump, resulting in dismissals and delays in various cases. Chutkan last week denied Trump’s motion to dismiss the indictment but allowed him to refile once all matters regarding immunity are resolved. Trump’s federal election interference case is one of several legal battles impacted by the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity. Other cases, such as the classified documents case in Florida and the hush money case in New York, have been dismissed or delayed because of the ruling. Trump was found guilty in the hush money case and his sentencing hearing has been postponed to next month.
