Bill Lewis Appointed to Alabama Supreme Court
Montgomery, AL – Bill Lewis, a former judge on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, has been appointed to the Alabama Supreme Court by Governor Kay Ivey. This decision follows the resignation of Associate Justice Jay Mitchell, who is pursuing a run for Alabama attorney general in 2026.
In a formal statement, Governor Ivey praised Lewis, stating, "Judge Bill Lewis continues demonstrating justice and fairness under the law, as well as a willingness to serve the people of Alabama. His decades of experience will serve the Supreme Court of Alabama well, and I am confident he is the best choice.”
Lewis holds undergraduate degrees in political science and economics from the University of the South and earned a law degree from Cumberland School of Law. He was appointed to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in February 2024, having previously served as a circuit court judge and presiding judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit in Elmore County. Additionally, Lewis founded the Lewis Law Firm in 2006 and worked as an assistant district attorney for the same circuit.
Chief Justice Sarah Stewart welcomed Lewis’s appointment, highlighting his extensive judicial experience and scholarly contributions. "We are excited that Gov. Ivey made such an impressive appointment to our bench. Justice Lewis will make an outstanding associate justice that truly cares about Alabama," Stewart remarked.
Lewis’s appointment is effective immediately, and he will be required to run for re-election in 2028, as stipulated by the state constitution. Governor Ivey is expected to appoint Lewis’s replacement on the Court of Civil Appeals shortly.
