Ivey Names Ben Bowden to the Court of Civil Appeals

Gov. Kay Ivey Appoints Benjamin Bowden to Alabama Court of Civil Appeals

MONTGOMERY, AL – Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Benjamin Bowden to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, effective immediately. Bowden, who has served as a circuit judge in the 22nd Judicial Circuit of Covington County since 2016, previously held the position of probate judge in the same county.

In her announcement, Ivey praised Bowden’s legal acumen and commitment to justice. “Judge Bowden’s impressive record as a legal scholar is matched by his exemplary performance as an attorney, prosecutor, and judge,” she stated. “He has steadfastly demonstrated a dedication to justice and fairness under the law. I have the utmost confidence that he will serve with the highest integrity.”

Bowden’s appointment comes after a significant shuffle in the state’s judiciary. Earlier in the week, Justice Jay Mitchell resigned from the Alabama Supreme Court to pursue a run for attorney general in 2026. Subsequently, Ivey appointed former civil appeals Judge Bill Lewis to fill Mitchell’s position on the Supreme Court.

Expressing his gratitude, Bowden said, “I am humbled by the confidence Governor Ivey has shown in allowing me to serve on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. Angie and I are thrilled at this new opportunity. I’m a public servant at heart and I look forward to serving the people of Alabama in this important and exciting way.”

A graduate of the University of Alabama, Bowden holds both undergraduate and law degrees from the institution. He also served in the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps and retired from the Air Force Reserves in 2023 with the rank of colonel, adding to his diverse legal background that includes experience in private practice.
