Alabama Legislative Session Concludes with Governor Ivey’s Approval of Key Bills
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — May 21, 2025 — Alabama Governor Kay Ivey officially wrapped up the 2025 legislative session last week by signing 33 bills and two resolutions into law, marking a significant milestone as the session comes to a close. Over the year, Ivey sanctioned a total of 287 bills and 147 resolutions, with every proposal originating from her office making it to her desk for approval. The legislature saw nearly 1,500 bills filed by state lawmakers.
Among the notable legislation signed on May 21 are provisions to enhance Medicaid services, law enforcement wiretapping capabilities for drug-related offenses, and new taxes on heated tobacco products. Local initiatives included an increase in seafood dealer license fees that will bolster the state’s seafood branding efforts, particularly through the nonprofit organization Sweet Grown Alabama.
Key statewide measures include:
- House Bill 45: Expands coverage for noninvasive colorectal cancer screenings.
- House Bill 137: Extends the wiretap law for law enforcement regarding felony drug offenses.
- Senate Bill 76: Known as Parker’s Law, allows nursing mothers a jury service excusal for up to 24 months.
- Senate Bill 101: Raises the minimum age for minors to consent to medical services from 14 to 16.
Two resolutions highlight future objectives: one creating a commission to study PTSD in first responders, and another urging the Alabama Growth Alliance to develop a strategic roadmap aimed at improving rural infrastructure and services. These measures reflect a concerted effort to address both immediate and long-term issues facing Alabama communities.
