Tragedy Strikes: Two Israeli Embassy Staff Killed in D.C. Shooting
WASHINGTON (AP) – In a shocking act of violence, two Israeli Embassy staff members were fatally shot on Wednesday evening as they exited an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. The suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, was arrested after shouting, “Free, free Palestine.”
The victims, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were reportedly a couple, with Lischinsky planning to propose to Milgrim in Jerusalem shortly. According to Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith, Rodriguez approached them and another group of four before opening fire. He later entered the museum, where he was detained by security.
The attack has intensified concerns surrounding rising antisemitism amid escalating tensions linked to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The conflict, ignited by Hamas’s deadly attacks on October 7, has resulted in extensive casualties and destruction in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli officials and leaders expressed their sorrow and anger. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident a consequence of rampant antisemitism and incitement against Israel. U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the attack, stating, “Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.”
Dan Bongino, deputy director of the FBI, described early reports indicating that the shooting was a targeted act of violence. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will pursue prosecution in the case, although it remains unclear if Rodriguez has legal representation.
Witnesses recounted hearing gunshots and observing the suspect behaving distressed. “This was a humanitarian aid event,” remarked attendee Yoni Kalin, highlighting the contrast between the event’s intent and the sorrowful outcome.
As the investigation unfolds, the Capital Jewish Museum has expressed deep sorrow over the violence, underscoring the need for enhanced security amidst a climate of uncertainty and fear.
