The Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Team is currently facing an unprecedented surge in entangled seals on Block Island, Rhode Island. Program manager Sarah Callan reported a troubling spike, with 20 entangled gray seals documented this year—more than the typical yearly count. These seals often become ensnared in fishing gear, debris, or balloons, resulting in potentially life-threatening injuries as they grow.
Recently, NBC News had exclusive access to the team’s efforts in collaboration with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and Block Island Maritime Institute to rescue seals born in recent months. The team demonstrated remarkable agility and coordination while attempting to disentangle a seal pup sunbathing near the shore. They crawled stealthily, then sprinted to scoop up the entangled pup with nets. After safely capturing the seal, they conducted a health assessment, drew blood, and attached a tracker, allowing them to release it back into the ocean without the need for rehabilitation.
The team’s dedication comes on the heels of their past efforts, including the rescue of a seal named “Chappy,” who tragically succumbed to health issues related to ingested plastic. Callan emphasized the alarming frequency with which marine mammals encounter debris, like plastic, stating that it is directly linked to the ocean’s health.
With estimates suggesting plastic pollution kills over 100,000 marine mammals annually, the Mystic team is committed to raising awareness about these threats. They celebrated the successful release of the recently rescued seal, noting the impact of their work in giving animals a “second chance at life.” “It’s such a special moment to see,” Callan remarked, highlighting the importance of their mission.
