Innovative Technology Developed by Historic Facility Shaping the Future

The Radio Frequency Simulation System (RFSS) at Redstone Arsenal celebrates 50 years of service to the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center. This hardware-in-the-loop facility tests missile system performance against intended targets, benefiting not only the U.S. Department of Defense but also NATO partners. The RFSS uses an anechoic chamber filled with carbon material to absorb electromagnetic energy, providing a silent environment for testing. It simulates real-world conditions and allows engineers multiple testing opportunities to grow technology and conceptualize new capabilities.

While flight tests are considered the gold standard, they are expensive and may not cover all aspects of system testing. The RFSS fills this gap by providing a cost-effective simulation environment. The system calculates the movement of missiles throughout a simulated flight with a six-degree model, crucial for accurate testing. The highly specialized team working in the chamber faces the challenge of training the next generation to continue the RFSS legacy. Despite the complex mix of hardware and software, team members find the work engaging and unique.

The DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center, headquartered at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is dedicated to advancing aviation and missile technology for the Army. As a part of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM), the center focuses on delivering innovative capabilities to support the Army’s strategic priorities and cross-functional teams. The RFSS continues to play a vital role in testing next-generation missile technology and ensuring the Army remains at the forefront of military innovation.
