Indiana Real Estate Investor Charged in Alleged College Baseball Betting Scandal
Bert Neff, an Indiana real estate investor and youth baseball coach, faces serious charges for allegedly misleading federal authorities in a case involving suspicious wagering activities linked to an April baseball game between Alabama and LSU. His actions reportedly led to the dismissal of Alabama coach Brad Bohannon, who was found to have connections to illegal betting activities.
Court documents filed in the Northern District of Alabama accuse Neff of receiving critical information from a contact within the Alabama baseball program, indicating the school’s starting pitcher was injured and unable to participate in the game. Allegedly, Neff shared this information with other bettors, which led them to place wagers on the game. The Crimson Tide subsequently lost 8-6, having benched pitcher Luke Holman.
Following the game, Bohannon was terminated for violating university standards related to ethical conduct. Allegations suggest that Neff attempted to destroy evidence, including replacing his mobile devices and advising fellow gamblers to delete messages. He is also accused of providing false statements during an FBI interview, where he admitted to placing a bet based on the tip he received.
Neff allegedly continued to communicate with the gamblers even after they testified before a grand jury, seeking to discuss their responses. In a troubling twist, reports indicate that Neff’s son is a pitcher at Cincinnati, leading to the termination of two university staff members for failing to report Neff’s gambling activities.
As the investigation unfolds, Neff’s actions raise significant concerns within collegiate athletics and the integrity of sports betting. This case underscores the broader implications of gambling in college sports.
