ICE confirms: University of Minnesota student lost visa due to drunk driving, not participating in protests

A University of Minnesota graduate student was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement due to a DUI infraction and not for being involved in protests, according to federal officials. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the student’s visa was revoked by the State Department because of a prior criminal history of driving under the influence. The news of the student’s detention sparked protests and concerns from university and political leaders. Another student at Minnesota State University Mankato was also detained by ICE, with no reason provided. University officials expressed concern about the lack of explanation and due process rights for the detained students. U.S. Sen. Tina Smith called the pattern of ICE detentions concerning and said she would press for answers from federal immigration authorities. The University of Minnesota has not named the detained student, who was enrolled in the business school in Minneapolis. The governor emphasized the importance of due process rights for all individuals in the country. The Trump administration has used a statute allowing visa revocations for noncitizens who could pose a threat to foreign policy interests, resulting in the detention or deportation of several individuals associated with universities and protests related to Palestinian causes.
