Mobile County Crackdown on Illegal Immigration: 28 Arrests Made
In a significant enforcement action on Tuesday, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), in collaboration with Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrested 28 individuals allegedly living in the U.S. illegally. The arrests were initiated when the suspects were pulled over for traffic violations while traveling on Dauphin Island Parkway, according to the MCSO.
The arrests highlight the ongoing commitment of local law enforcement to uphold U.S. immigration laws. "The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office continues to work daily with our Federal Partners to protect our community," stated MCSO in a press release. The individuals are currently in the custody of Homeland Security, where they will undergo processing that may lead to an immigration court hearing and potential deportation.
This crackdown is part of a broader trend in Alabama, where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased enforcement actions in line with President Trump’s directive for a substantial deportation effort. Currently, at least nine agreements under the 287(g) program allow local sheriffs in six Alabama counties to enforce federal immigration laws, although Mobile County lacks such an agreement.
Concerns are rising among immigrant communities and advocacy groups regarding the increased probability of unjust detentions. “I think anyone who appears to be an immigrant needs to proceed with caution at this point,” remarked Allison Hamilton, executive director of the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice.
Recent incidents, including the arrest of a 25-year-old construction worker, Leonardo García Venegas, under what advocates call racial profiling, further underscore these fears. After presenting a valid REAL ID, Venegas was detained due to his appearance and language limitations, stirring controversy around potential bias in enforcement actions.
The Department of Homeland Security maintains that individuals obstructing law enforcement will face consequences, underscoring the delicate balance between immigration enforcement and community trust.
