Auburn’s Hugh Freeze Eyes Redemption in Critical Year 3
As Auburn University’s head football coach, Hugh Freeze is gearing up for a crucial third season in 2025 after a challenging start. The Tigers have recorded an 11-14 overall record during Freeze’s tenure, notably missing the postseason this past year. As the new season approaches, Freeze has made it clear that bowl eligibility is a non-negotiable goal.
"I’m not a fool. I think we’ve got to go to a bowl game,” Freeze declared, acknowledging the pressure to improve. He inherited a program that had not seen a top-25 recruiting class in four years, a situation he believes is untenable for success in a competitive league. With two consecutive top-10 recruiting classes now secured, Freeze is optimistic that a third will bolster the roster.
Despite these improvements, he concedes that last season’s missed opportunities must be addressed. “We could have won some games last year [that we didn’t],” he said. “We’ve got to find a way to ensure excellence in those areas.” Meeting the expectations of fans and administration alike, he aims to transition Auburn back to its winning ways.
Historically, Freeze has typically led his teams to bowl eligibility. In his 12 years as an FBS head coach, last season’s failure marked just the second instance where one of his squads did not achieve at least six wins, the other being his final year at Ole Miss in 2016.
Looking ahead, Auburn’s 2025 season kicks off against Baylor on August 29, with sportsbooks already setting the Tigers’ win total at 7.5. It’s a year filled with high expectations for Freeze and a program eager to reclaim its competitive edge.
