Alabama’s efforts to improve government efficiency have been highlighted by the work of the Alabama Commission on the Evaluation of Services (ACES). Similar to the Department of Government Efficiency at the federal level, ACES uses a data-driven approach to make recommendations for more efficient use of state resources.
ACES officials recently testified before the Alabama House Fiscal Responsibility Committee to discuss their progress and challenges. Despite facing obstacles such as the pandemic and limited staff, the commission has made some strides in areas like education and healthcare. For example, they advocated for pay raises for new teachers to address high turnover rates.
However, one of the biggest challenges the commission faces is the lack of data to evaluate the effectiveness of programs. They are calling on lawmakers to include more detailed data and definitions in bills to ensure accountability and measure success.
The commission, which includes 14 members appointed by the legislature and Governor Kay Ivey, hopes to expand their staff from five to around 20 to further their mission of improving government efficiency in Alabama.
While their successes may be small in terms of dollar amounts, ACES is committed to creating a more streamlined and effective state government. As they continue their work, they are optimistic about the potential impact their recommendations can have on improving services for Alabama residents.
