House Approves Legislation Requiring Display of Ten Commandments in Schools

The Alabama House of Representatives recently passed a bill that will require K-12 schools to display the Ten Commandments in any room where history is taught. Sponsored by Rep. Mark Gidley, the bill mandates that each school in the state must have at least a poster display of the Ten Commandments in a common area, in addition to history classroom displays. The bill was amended to exclude colleges and universities, and schools are only required to create the displays once enough private funding has been collected.

The bill passed with a vote of 81-11 and seven abstentions, with some Democrats joining Republicans in support. Rep. Patrick Sellers emphasized the importance of schoolchildren being exposed to the Ten Commandments, suggesting it could deter undesirable behavior. However, Rep. A.J. McCampbell, who abstained from the vote, argued that personal behavior towards others is a more effective way to display the Commandments.

Critics have voiced concerns that the bill could be seen as favoring one religion over others. Despite these criticisms, the bill is now headed to the Senate with limited time remaining in the legislative session. If passed, schools across Alabama will be required to have displays of the Ten Commandments in designated areas, funded solely by private donations to avoid potential constitutional issues.
