Family and friends are grieving the tragic deaths of a Washington state couple, Ilya and Sophia Tsaruk, who died while snorkeling on vacation in Hawaii. Sophia, who was pregnant, and Ilya were found unresponsive near the shore of Āhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve on Maui. Emergency responders attempted CPR but both were pronounced dead at the scene. The couple’s 18-month-old son was not with them at the time.
The Tsaruks were on a babymoon with friends when the incident occurred. Family members believe the full face snorkel masks they were wearing may have played a role in the tragedy, although it is only speculation at this point. The couple was excitedly preparing for their unborn daughter, planning to name her Melody, and had been setting up her nursery.
A celebration of life and burial service will be held for the Tsaruks in Washington. The surviving toddler is said to be in good hands with family. Authorities have not yet determined if there will be an investigation into the incident. This heartbreaking event has left loved ones devastated and remembering the young couple for their joy and anticipation of the future.
