Head of the EU tours flood-hit area in Poland, promises generous aid package

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has pledged billions of euros in aid for Central European countries affected by severe flooding. During her visit to a flood-damaged region in south-eastern Poland, she announced that funds would be quickly available from the EU’s solidarity fund for repair efforts. In addition to this, she also pledged an additional 10 billion euros for urgent repairs, stating that “extraordinary times need extraordinary measures.” Von der Leyen emphasized that no contribution from the affected countries would be required for the release of the funds, in recognition of the scale of the destruction caused by the floods. The EU chief made the announcement in Wroclaw, Poland, where she met with government heads from Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Homes have been destroyed and lives lost as a result of the flooding, making the need for swift action and support crucial in the face of such devastation. The pledge from the EU is seen as an important step in providing much-needed assistance to the affected countries in their recovery efforts.
