Hanceville Police Department Closed Due to Corruption Scandal; Sheriff’s Office Takes Over

Hanceville Shuts Down Police Department Amid Corruption Scandal

HANCEVILLE, AL – The small town of Hanceville, home to about 3,300 residents, is grappling with the fallout of a shocking corruption scandal that has led to the closure of its police department. On February 20, Mayor Jim Sawyer announced that all police department employees would be placed on administrative leave after five officers and one spouse were indicted for misconduct.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office will now oversee law enforcement duties in Hanceville, ensuring residents continue to receive police protection amid this crisis. The decision comes after an investigation into the death of police dispatcher Christopher Willingham, who was found deceased in his office last August. Autopsy results revealed he had lethal levels of multiple drugs in his system, prompting a deeper examination of department activities.

The investigation uncovered serious allegations including drug distribution, evidence tampering, and abuse of power within the police force. In response to the turmoil, Mayor Sawyer thanked Sheriff Matt Gentry for his assistance during this troubling time.

A city council meeting is scheduled for February 27 to consider the future of the police department, including the potential for its permanent disbandment. The grand jury has recommended abolishing the department, which currently employs nine staff members and operates on a $1.5 million budget.

As Hanceville residents process this shocking turn of events, uncertainty looms over the community regarding the path forward for their law enforcement services.
