Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has announced that the application period for the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education Act (CHOOSE Act) will close on April 7. This initiative, which provides education savings accounts for eligible families, was championed by Governor Ivey and signed into law in March 2024. Through the CHOOSE Act, families can apply for funding for the 2025-2026 school year to help with tuition, tutoring, therapy, and other educational expenses.
The program offers $7,000 per eligible student in a participating school and $2,000 per student in a home education program, with a maximum of $4,000 per family. The CHOOSE Act provides $100 million in annual ESA funding through the Alabama Department of Revenue, with over 27,000 students applying since January 2025.
Priority for the ESAs will be given to students with special needs and dependents of active-duty service members in priority schools. Remaining ESAs will be awarded based on family income, not exceeding 300 percent of the federal poverty level for the previous tax year.
Families must apply by April 7 through the program’s website, which also provides eligibility information, FAQs, and guides for parents and education service providers. Once approved, families will be notified in May, and funds can be used starting in July. For more information, visit chooseact.alabama.gov.
