Governor Ivey Distributes Statewide Grants to Combat Crime and Aid Victims

Gov. Kay Ivey has recently awarded more than $1 million in grants to assist law enforcement agencies in drug, domestic violence, and human trafficking cases in Alabama. These grants will also provide shelter and care to victims of crimes like sexual assault. The funds were made available through programs from the U.S. Department of Justice, with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs overseeing the awards.

The awarded organizations include the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts, the Office of Prosecution Services, the Alabama Coalition Against Rape Inc., Camille Place, and Covenant Rescue Group. These organizations will use the funding for equipment to analyze drug cases, education and training on domestic violence, implementing programs to assist domestic violence victims, training for law enforcement and advocates to assist victims of sexual assault, child abuse, and human trafficking, providing housing and therapy to human trafficking victims, and training for law enforcement in human trafficking and child exploitation cases.

Governor Ivey expressed her support for these programs, stating that they will have a positive impact on communities by improving the ability of criminal justice agencies to investigate and prosecute crimes, and by offering support to crime victims looking to rebuild their lives. ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell also noted that the grants will help keep communities safe and expedite criminal cases. ADECA administers various programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation, and recreation in Alabama.
