Governor Kay Ivey Appoints Judge Bill Lewis to Alabama Supreme Court

Montgomery, AL – On Tuesday, Governor Kay Ivey announced the appointment of Judge Bill Lewis to the Supreme Court of Alabama, following the unexpected resignation of Justice Jay Mitchell. Mitchell stepped down to launch his campaign for state attorney general in 2026.

Judge Lewis, who was appointed to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in February 2024, will begin his new role immediately. "Judge Bill Lewis has consistently demonstrated justice and fairness under the law, along with a dedication to serving the people of Alabama," Governor Ivey stated. "His decades of experience will benefit the Supreme Court immensely, and I am confident he is the best choice for this position."

Before his appointment to the Court of Civil Appeals, Lewis served as the presiding judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit in Elmore County. He has a robust legal background, having established the Lewis Law Firm in 2006 and previously serving as an assistant district attorney within the same judicial circuit. Lewis’s expertise spans criminal defense, civil law, and family law.

He earned degrees in political science and economics from the University of the South and holds a law degree from the Cumberland School of Law.

Governor Ivey spoke with Judge Lewis earlier today, affirming the significance of his role on the high court. The governor’s office stated that an announcement regarding Lewis’s successor on the Court of Civil Appeals will be made shortly.

This appointment marks a pivotal moment for the Alabama Supreme Court, with Lewis’s extensive legal experience expected to bring valuable insights to the bench.
