Cynthia Lee Almond Appointed President of Alabama’s Public Service Commission
Montgomery, AL – Governor Kay Ivey has officially appointed Cynthia Lee Almond as the new president of the Alabama Public Service Commission. In a press release, Ivey praised Almond’s effectiveness as a public servant and expressed confidence in her ability to lead, stating, “The people of Alabama will be even better served when she takes the helm at the Public Service Commission.”
Almond, a Republican from Tuscaloosa, has been a member of the Alabama House of Representatives and brings considerable experience as an attorney specializing in estate planning, probate, business law, and real estate. She replaces Twinkle Cavanaugh, who recently resigned to take a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture under President Donald Trump. Cavanaugh had been a member of the commission since 2010 and served as president since 2012.
The Alabama Public Service Commission is a critical three-member board responsible for regulating utilities, including electricity providers, and setting rates for consumers. The commission has faced public scrutiny over increasing utility bills.
Expressing gratitude for her appointment, Almond stated, “I am honored to fill this important position. It is one I accept with great enthusiasm.” She emphasized her commitment to the commission’s responsibilities, looking forward to leveraging her legal and legislative experience in this new role.
Before joining the state legislature in 2021, Almond served four terms on the Tuscaloosa City Council, including a stint as president pro tempore. A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, she will vacate her House seat on June 15, with Ivey set to swear her in on June 16. Ivey acknowledged the impact of Almond’s leadership, stating, “Every person across this state will now benefit from her leadership on the Public Service Commission.”
