(AP) – Republican U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, best known for his tenure as a college football coach, is reportedly planning to enter the gubernatorial race in Alabama for 2026, according to sources familiar with his intentions. While he has not officially confirmed the bid, Tuberville hinted at an announcement expected next Tuesday, stating, “It was a hard decision.”
Tuberville, who rose to political prominence after securing a Senate seat in 2020—overcoming former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and defeating Democrat Doug Jones—has consistently aligned himself with former President Donald Trump. His strong endorsement from Trump played a vital role in his election campaign.
As he prepares for the governor’s race, Tuberville is considered a strong candidate. Current two-term Governor Kay Ivey is term-limited and cannot seek re-election. The Club for Growth PAC has already backed Tuberville’s potential candidacy, praising his commitment to fiscal responsibility and educational reforms.
During his time in the Senate, Tuberville has been a controversial figure, notably blocking military promotions in protest of Pentagon policies related to abortion support. Prior to his voter registration in Alabama in 2019, Tuberville and his wife voted in Florida in 2018.
