GM Introduces Innovative EV Battery Technology, Striving to Lead the Market

General Motors (GM) is set to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) technology with its new lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries, aimed at reducing costs and enhancing profits for its large electric SUVs and trucks, including the Chevrolet Silverado and Escalade IQ, slated for 2028. These new batteries utilize more accessible and affordable minerals like manganese, minimizing reliance on cobalt and nickel, thus addressing key factors like range, safety, and energy efficiency.

GM’s vice president, Kurt Kelty, highlighted the LMR technology as a transformative breakthrough that offers premium performance at a lower cost, positioning it as a competitive edge against rivals such as Ford, which also announced plans for LMR batteries. While LMR technology has existed for some time, its durability has historically been an issue—something GM claims to have resolved through a partnership with LG Energy Solution. Production of these prismatic cells is expected to commence in the U.S. by 2028.

The new battery design promises to be lighter, featuring 50% fewer components and a substantial reduction in modules, thus enhancing the efficiency of the large EVs. GM’s research into manganese-rich batteries dates back to 2015, with significant advancements made recently. The anticipated energy density of the LMR batteries could offer a 33% increase compared to current best-performing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, while costs per kilowatt-hour (kWh) could drop significantly from current levels.

As part of its broader electrification strategy, GM aims to alleviate concerns regarding EV affordability and range, targeting over 400 miles of range for electric trucks, and has committed substantial financial resources to this sector, despite noting slower-than-expected consumer demand.
