Sweet Relief: Two Alabama Bakeries Lead the Gluten-Free Movement

With the rising awareness of gluten intolerance and allergies, finding gluten-free options has become increasingly simpler. In Alabama, two bakeries are delighting the gluten-sensitive community with an array of delectable treats.

Mason Dixon Bakery is located at 415 Church St. NW in Huntsville. Founded by Ashley Ramirez in 2013 after her diagnosis of celiac disease, she combined her expertise in chemistry with her passion for baking to create the state’s first gluten-free bakery. Under CEO Rachel Bryers, Mason Dixon Bakery is committed to using natural ingredients, replacing artificial dyes with healthy alternatives like beets and spirulina. The bakery offers a diverse daily menu, featuring everything from biscuits to cupcakes, and produces nearly 1,000 buttermilk biscuits each week, making it a staple for those seeking allergen-friendly options.

Guncles, situated at 1252 Government St. in Mobile, is another gem in the gluten-free landscape. Founded by John Edward McGee and his husband, Demetrius James, Guncles began as a home-based venture spurred by McGee’s wheat allergy. The bakery quickly gained popularity for its nostalgic, family-inspired confections, evolving into a beloved shop well-known for its regional distribution and nationwide shipping. From creamy bundt cakes to savory cheddar biscuits, Guncles satisfies cravings for gluten-free comfort food. However, customers are encouraged to act fast, as popular items often sell out quickly.

These bakeries are paving the way for gluten-free indulgence in Alabama, transforming the culinary landscape and making life a little sweeter for those with dietary restrictions.
