Funeral Planned for Idaho Teen with Autism Fatally Shot by Police in His Yard

A funeral will be held for Victor Perez, a 17-year-old Idaho boy with autism who was shot and killed by police after a neighbor reported a knife incident at his family’s home. Family members said Perez was autistic and had cerebral palsy. The family was having a barbecue when Perez found a hidden knife, prompting a confrontation with his sister. The police chief stated that officers repeatedly ordered Perez to drop the knife before he advanced towards them, leading to the shooting. Video footage showed officers firing at Perez through a chain link fence. Perez was taken off life support after being declared brain dead. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, and investigations into the incident were launched. Perez’s family claimed he was in a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting and criticized the police for not properly assessing the situation. The funeral will be open to the public, and an external investigation is being conducted by the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force. The autopsy results have not been disclosed yet. The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about police response to individuals with disabilities.
