Two hostages, Yarden Bibas and Ofer Kalderon, have arrived in southern Israel, where they were met by their families at a hospital. However, questions remain about the fate of Bibas’ wife and two young children, who were taken hostage with him but reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in November 2023. The orderly handover of Bibas and Kalderon by Hamas militants in Khan Younis was contrasted with a chaotic handover the day before. The Israeli military confirmed the handover and said they are prepared to receive an additional hostage, Keith Siegel, in the near future. Siegel, an American Israeli, was taken during the same attack as Bibas and Kalderon and is among the three hostages set to be released as part of the exchange.
The exchange process is underway in Gaza, with Hamas releasing the hostages to the Red Cross at a ceremony in Khan Younis. Siegel, Bibas, and Kalderon are expected to be reunited with their families as part of the fourth hostage-prisoner exchange with Israel. Siegel, originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was last seen in a video released by Hamas in which he reassured his family he was okay. The hostages were taken during Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, which resulted in numerous people being kidnapped and killed.
