Former Texas WR Johntay Cook Signs with Syracuse
Syracuse University has secured a significant transfer commitment, welcoming former Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook, as reported by multiple sources, including On3’s Hayes Fawcett. This move signifies Cook’s intent to revitalize his career under the guidance of head coach Fran Brown, who successfully reinvigorated the Orange program last season.
Cook, a highly touted 5-star recruit from DeSoto, Texas, had a promising start to his college career at Texas, participating in 14 games during his freshman year in 2023. Despite this, he recorded only 8 receptions for 136 yards. His production dipped further in 2024, as he played in 6 games, achieving similar statistics and ultimately leaving the team midway through the season to explore transfer opportunities. Initially committing to Washington, Cook reconsidered just weeks later and is now set to join Syracuse, where he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
At 6 feet and 186 pounds, Cook possesses excellent speed and a strong understanding of route running, attributes that made him a standout athlete in high school, where he tallied close to 50 career touchdowns. His potential is promising, and if Coach Brown can harness his talent, Syracuse could greatly benefit.
Cook marks the 15th transfer addition for Syracuse this offseason, complementing the acquisition of former Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli and other key players. The Orange are aiming to build on a successful 10-3 season, yet they face the significant challenge of replacing three key pass-catchers who each surpassed 900 yards receiving last season.
