Quarterback Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns sustained a season-ending Achilles tendon injury during the team’s recent game against the Cincinnati Bengals. In response to Watson’s injury, the Browns signed quarterback Bailey Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs. Zappe had previously been on the Chiefs’ practice squad after being waived by the New England Patriots.
Chris Oladokun, who had been with the Chiefs but was replaced by Zappe, has now returned to Kansas City as a result. Oladokun had been the Chiefs’ leading passer in the preseason, but the team chose to keep Carson Wentz as a backup to Patrick Mahomes. Now, with Zappe gone, Oladokun has been brought back to the roster.
Oladokun has had a journey in his football career, starting at Samford before transferring to South Dakota State. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 but was ultimately cut during the preseason. He then joined the Chiefs’ practice squad, only to be replaced by Zappe. Now, he has the opportunity to prove himself once again in Kansas City.
This shift in the Chiefs’ quarterback lineup comes as they continue to make adjustments and evaluate their options. Oladokun’s return to the team adds another layer to their quarterback situation as they navigate the challenges of an unpredictable NFL season.
