Former President of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, passes away at age 86 after being imprisoned for human rights violations | Political News

Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru known for stabilizing the country’s economy but also for human rights abuses, has passed away at the age of 86 after battling cancer. His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, announced his death and asked for prayers for his soul.

Fujimori rose to power in 1990, defeating Mario Vargas Llosa in a run-off vote. During his presidency, he successfully tackled hyperinflation, boosted economic growth, and cracked down on rebel groups, earning both praise and criticism for his methods. However, he was later accused of consolidating power undemocratically and fleeing the country amidst corruption scandals.

After being extradited to Peru in 2005 and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for human rights abuses, Fujimori was released on humanitarian grounds in December. His daughter had announced plans for him to run for a fourth term as president in 2026.

Fujimori’s death marks the end of a controversial era in Peru’s history, with his legacy still debated by many. His passing has sparked both mourning and reflection on his impact on the country and its institutions.
