Former elected official, lawyers, and medical bill company owner included on Biden’s list of clemency and pardons

President Joe Biden commuted close to 1,500 sentences and pardoned 39 people in the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The individuals granted clemency were convicted of non-violent crimes and many had already completed their sentences. The pardons will now wipe the crimes from their records, giving them a fresh start.

Some of the individuals granted clemency include a former Cuyahoga County Commissioner, Jimmy Dimora, who was released into home confinement after serving nearly 12 years for corruption charges. Another individual, Anthony Le, was sentenced to ten years for drug and gun charges in 2020 when he was 21 years old. Malcolm Hartzog had his life sentence commuted to 30 years by former President Barack Obama in 2016 for drug-related charges.

Additionally, Paul Daugerdas, a former law partner from Illinois, was convicted of overseeing fraudulent tax shelters costing the government over $1.63 billion. Elaine Lovett, a medical billing company owner from Michigan, was convicted in 2017 for defrauding Medicare of $26 million. Shaquan Hemingway was part of an interstate drug trafficking operation involving heroin, fentanyl, crack cocaine, and methamphetamines.

Overall, the act of clemency by President Biden aimed to provide second chances to individuals who had been convicted of non-violent crimes and were released from prison more than a year ago. The pardons will allow these individuals to start anew and move forward with their lives.
