Former Pastor and Lawyer Josh Pendergrass Announces Candidacy for Alabama State Auditor

Josh Pendergrass, a 40-year-old lawyer and former pastor, has declared his candidacy for the position of Alabama State Auditor, seeking the Republican nomination. Pendergrass previously served as the first communications director under Governor Kay Ivey and believes the auditor’s role is crucial for maintaining government integrity and efficient use of taxpayer funds.

The current State Auditor, Andrew Sorrell, is running for secretary of state, creating an open seat for the upcoming elections. "The auditor is essential for good governance, ensuring that the $1.3 billion in state property spending is tracked and managed responsibly," said Pendergrass. He emphasized that the auditor’s office serves as Alabama’s version of a Department of Good Economic Governance (DOGE), reinforcing the importance of fiscal responsibility.

Pendergrass, who resides in Autauga County, highlighted the auditor’s duty in appointing registrars for fair and secure elections across Alabama’s 67 counties. He envisions expanding this role to enhance transparency and integrity within state government.

His previous experiences, spanning from his law practice to his ministry and work with Governor Ivey, have instilled a commitment to integrity and action in service of Alabamians. "I’m dedicated to ensuring our state prioritizes transparency, fiscal discipline, and accountability," he stated.

In 2022, Pendergrass attempted to run for the Alabama House of Representatives, but redistricting altered his candidacy path. He started his law firm in 2011, serving various counties within the 19th Judicial Circuit. As he embarks on his audacious campaign, Pendergrass emphasizes a commitment to truth-telling and resisting political gamesmanship, guided by the vision of leaders like President Trump to combat government waste and restore public trust.
