Former Alabama Running Back’s NFL Season Expected to End Prematurely

Atlanta Falcons Place Rookie Running Back Jase McClellan on Injured Reserve

The Atlanta Falcons announced on Wednesday that rookie running back Jase McClellan has been placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury sustained during practice, sidelining him since November 28. Under NFL guidelines, players on injured reserve must miss a minimum of four games, which means McClellan will miss the remainder of the regular season as the Falcons only have four games left in the 2024 schedule. However, there is a possibility of his return should the Falcons qualify for the playoffs.

Currently, the Falcons are preparing for a crucial matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday with a record of 6-7, positioning them one game behind Tampa Bay in the NFC South, which is led by the Buccaneers at 7-6. Notably, the Falcons have previously triumphed over Tampa Bay in both of their encounters this season. Atlanta is also two games back in the hunt for the NFC’s final wild-card spot, trailing the Washington Commanders at 8-5.

McClellan, picked in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft after an impressive college career at Alabama where he amassed 890 yards and eight touchdowns, demonstrated promise during preseason with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. However, his regular-season involvement has been limited, totaling just 32 yards on 13 carries over two games.

To fill McClellan’s roster spot, the Falcons have signed running back Carlos Washington Jr. from their practice squad, looking to bolster their backfield as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
