Former Alabama Lt. Governor George McMillan Dies at 81

George McMillan, Former Alabama Lieutenant Governor, Passes Away at 81

Greenville native and respected former Alabama legislator, George McMillan, has died at the age of 81. Known for his remarkable political journey, McMillan was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1973 representing Jefferson County. His political career quickly advanced, leading to his election to the State Senate a year later. In 1978, he became the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Alabama and famously ran for governor in 1982, narrowly losing to incumbent George Wallace in a competitive runoff.

Governor Kay Ivey, a longtime friend and fellow Auburn University alumnus, expressed her sorrow upon hearing the news. "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former lieutenant governor and my good friend, George McMillan," said Ivey. She reflected on their shared experiences in student government and highlighted McMillan’s dedication to public service and innovative ideas during his tenure.

After stepping away from politics, McMillan shifted his focus to enhancing Birmingham’s national profile. In 1989, he founded City Stages, a music festival that showcased Birmingham’s vibrant arts scene and drew national attention.

Plans for a public celebration of McMillan’s life are forthcoming, along with a flag directive to honor his contributions to the state. His passing marks a significant loss for many who admired his commitment to service and community development.
