Former SEC Stars Eye High Selections in upcoming 2025 NBA Draft
As the 2025 NBA Draft approaches—just eight days away—several former SEC standout players are projected to be early picks. ESPN analysts Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Wood recently released a mock draft featuring five former SEC athletes slated for the first round.
Leading the charge is Texas guard Tre Johnson, projected to be the first SEC player selected, landing the No. 5 overall spot with the Utah Jazz. According to Wood’s analysis, Johnson’s exceptional perimeter shooting and potential for all-around scoring make him a valuable asset. He is followed closely by Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears, who is forecasted for the No. 7 pick. If this holds true, Fears would become Oklahoma’s first first-round pick since Trae Young in 2018.
South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Boyles is vying for a position as a potential lottery selection, with a projection at No. 15 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Renowned for his defensive skills and playmaking abilities, he could make a significant impact at the next level.
Georgia center Asa Newell is expected to be picked No. 18 overall by the Washington Wizards, following an impressive freshman season. Meanwhile, Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr.—one of the more seasoned prospects—aims for a late first-round pick, projected to No. 29 with the Phoenix Suns. Clayton’s status as an elite shot-maker, complemented by his achievement as part of the Gators’ National Championship run, bolsters his draft stock.
Notably, no Kentucky players are predicted to make the first round, breaking the program’s streak of producing at least one first-round pick since 2009.
The 2025 NBA Draft is set for June 25, making it an exciting time for SEC alumni in the basketball community.
