Bipartisan Effort Boosts Bridge Infrastructure Funding in Alabama
Washington, D.C.—In a significant push for infrastructure development, U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) has introduced the bipartisan Bridge Investment and Modernization Act aimed at enhancing federal funding for bridge projects across the nation. This legislation seeks to streamline the funding process for critical infrastructure initiatives, including the crucial I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project. The bill also aims to reauthorize the Bridge Investment Program until 2031.
Rep. Figures emphasized the importance of this legislation for communities, stating, “This bill is a step in the right direction toward real advancements in projects like the I-10 Bridge, helping to ensure the completion of infrastructure projects all across America.” His call for connectivity resonates strongly in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama.
Co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), this bipartisan bill aims to expedite bridge repairs and upgrades, addressing past limitations of the Bridge Investment Program, which allowed only one major grant per state. Moore remarked, “This bill allows for continued investments in American infrastructure and specifically advances projects like the I-10 Bridge, making travel safer and easier for so many across the Gulf Coast.”
Additionally, Republican Rep. Mike Ezell of Mississippi is supporting the legislation, which has been submitted to the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Portal for future consideration by the House.
In a further show of commitment, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced in May the release of a $550 million federal grant designated for the construction of the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project, reinforcing the administration’s focus on vital infrastructure improvements in the region. This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone for infrastructure development in Alabama and aims to enhance safety and connectivity for Gulf Coast residents.
