Family of German national with U.S. green card claims he is being detained at ICE facility

Fabian Schmidt, a 34-year-old legal permanent U.S. resident from Germany, was detained by U.S. immigration authorities at Boston Logan International Airport on March 7 and later transferred to a federal detention facility in Rhode Island. Schmidt’s mother, Astrid Senior, and his partner, Bhavani Hodgkins, were not given a reason for his detention. He had returned from a trip to Germany and was supposed to be picked up by Hodgkins. Concerned when he did not appear, Hodgkins contacted authorities. Senior said Schmidt was interrogated at the airport and required medical attention before being taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Schmidt’s family has retained a lawyer to work on his case, and the German embassy in Washington, D.C. is also involved. ICE and CBP have not provided specific details due to privacy regulations but emphasized that travelers who violate statutes or visa terms can be subject to detention and removal. Schmidt’s case has raised concerns about how federal immigration officials are treating legal residents. President Trump’s administration has recently increased border enforcement and immigration policies, adding to the scrutiny of cases like Schmidt’s.

Schmidt, an electrical engineer, has a family in New Hampshire and no active legal issues according to his mother. The Massachusetts State Police responded to his medical emergency at the airport, and Massachusetts General Hospital was involved in his care. The German embassy is working closely with U.S. authorities on the case, but due to privacy laws, detailed information is limited. Schmidt’s family and legal team are advocating for his release and maintaining transparency in the process.
