Trump’s Alabama Commencement Visit Marred by Misinformation
Tuscaloosa, AL – As he delivered a commencement address at the University of Alabama on Thursday, President Donald Trump faced scrutiny for several misleading statements leading up to his visit. Trump announced on his Truth Social prior to landing that he was looking forward to addressing “nine graduations,” a mischaracterization as the university actually hosts eight ceremonies throughout the weekend.
On stage, Trump reiterated his claims from previous speeches, asserting again that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged,” ignoring factual rebuttals about his electoral margins in Alabama. Trump won by 28 percentage points in 2016 and 25.5 in 2020, with a margin of 30.6 points in 2024 against Kamala Harris.
He also made erroneous claims regarding economic conditions, stating that egg prices had dropped 87%. According to FactCheck.org, egg prices for consumers were still on the rise as of March. Similarly, Trump’s claim that he had reduced the flow of illegal immigration by 99.99% was labeled misleading, as experts point to contentious policies rather than accurate statistics.
Trump emphasized gas prices were down, but data from the Energy Information Administration contradicts this assertion, indicating they increased slightly since his second term began. Despite Trump asserting that his administration had the “most successful 100 days,” his approval ratings and economic indicators tell a different story, with recent reports showing an economic contraction and declining consumer spending.
As misinformation continues to shadow his remarks, it remains uncertain how Trump’s statements will resonate with his supporters and the general public.
