Former chemistry teacher Wendy Winnard, who spent 38 years in the field, reflects on the evolution of technology in education and how it has transformed her teaching methods. From starting out with chalk and acetate transparencies to embracing digital projectors and virtual learning environments, Winnard highlights the advancements in edtech over the years.
In her new role training computer experts in AI, quantum computing, and supercomputing, Winnard emphasizes the importance of using technology to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment. She encourages educators to share their experiences of incorporating AI and other technologies in the classroom.
Having witnessed the tech revolution in education, Winnard shares her journey of adapting to new tools and equipment to engage her students. From editing videos manually to using digital editing software, she demonstrates the improvements technology has brought to the learning experience.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Winnard successfully transitioned to remote teaching using Zoom and virtual learning environments, showcasing the importance of technology in enabling continuous education during challenging times.
Looking towards the future, Winnard poses the question of what educational technology will look like in 2030, urging educators to continue exploring new ways to integrate tech into teaching practices.
