Elon Musk’s Approval Rating Plummets: A Shift from Popularity to "Political Kryptonite"
Elon Musk, once a beloved figure across the political spectrum, has seen a sharp decline in his approval ratings over the past seven years. According to CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten, Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, now suffers from what is being termed "political kryptonite."
In 2017, Musk boasted a net favorability rating of 24 percentage points, but current polls reveal a drastic drop, with his ratings now underwater by 19 percentage points. The decline is particularly notable among Democrats, where his approval plummeted from a +35 rating in 2019 to an astonishing -91 today. Enten remarked, “You can’t really go down lower than that… he became greatly disliked by the American public, especially Democrats.”
This dip in popularity is adversely affecting Tesla as well, with the company’s net favorability now at -20 percentage points. Enten emphasized the intertwined nature of Musk’s reputation and Tesla’s performance, suggesting it will be "awfully difficult to sell cars" under such unfavorable conditions.
In light of his dwindling political capital, Musk announced he would be reducing his involvement in political campaigns and shifting focus back to his businesses. This announcement comes just weeks after a disappointing loss for a candidate he supported in a Wisconsin Supreme Court race.
Interestingly, former President Donald Trump has also begun to distance himself from Musk. After highlighting Musk in approximately 40 posts on his Truth Social account, Trump has mentioned him zero times since early April, indicating a recognition that Musk’s political influence has waned.
As Musk navigates this new landscape, the fallout from his declining approval ratings could reshape not just his image, but Tesla’s future as well.
