Elon Musk Criticizes Australian Government, Calls them ‘Fascists’ for Misinformation Law on Social Media

Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s criticism of the Australian government’s proposed laws to fine social media companies for failing to stop the spread of misinformation has sparked a rebuke from Australian officials. The legislation, introduced by the center-left Labor Party government, could see platforms fined up to 5 percent of global annual revenue for allowing the spread of false or harmful content. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland defended the law as necessary to protect Australians from misinformation and disinformation, which she said pose a serious threat to democracy and society.

Musk, in response to a post about the proposed law, called the Australian government “fascists,” prompting Government Services Minister Bill Shorten to accuse him of being inconsistent on freedom of speech. Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones also criticized Musk’s comments, highlighting that the law is a matter of national sovereignty and aimed at preventing the spread of harmful content like deepfake material and child pornography.

This is not the first time Musk has clashed with Australian authorities over free speech issues. In April, his company X went to court to challenge an order to remove posts related to a knife attack on a bishop in Sydney. The legal battle ended in June when the eSafety commissioner dropped the case after a judge declined to extend an order to hide the graphic video globally. The dispute led to tensions between Musk and Australian officials, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeling him an “arrogant billionaire.”

As the debate over online misinformation and free speech continues, the clash between Musk and Australian officials reflects the challenges governments face in regulating social media platforms while balancing freedom of expression.
