Eaglet that went missing from California nest ‘did not survive’

The missing eaglet from a popular Southern California eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow, was found dead in a recent winter storm, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley. The eaglet did not survive the severe winter storm that brought over 2 feet of snow to the area. Jackie and Shadow had laid three eggs at the end of January, all of which hatched in the first week of March. Videos of the nest showed all three eaglets being fed on Thursday, but only two were present on Friday and Saturday. The third eaglet died sometime after being seen fed with its siblings on Thursday. The cause of death is unknown, as the nest view is still partly obstructed by melting snow and the chicks were all similar in size. Despite the loss, Jackie and Shadow continued to care for their remaining young on Saturday. Friends of Big Bear Valley emphasized the unpredictability of nature and urged viewers to take comfort in the perseverance of the eagle parents. They described nature as wild and unscripted, highlighting the resilience of Jackie and Shadow as they move forward despite the tragedy.
