Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Douglas Coleman III was taken from Arrowhead Stadium in an ambulance after a neck injury during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears. Coleman tackled the Chiefs’ Cornell Powell on the first play of the second half, bending his neck awkwardly on impact. Trainers and doctors quickly attended to him on the field, immobilizing him on a stretcher and taking him off the field. Bears coach Matt Eberflus reported that Coleman was moving his extremities and gave a thumbs-up before being taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Although Coleman was injured, the Bears went on to win the preseason finale 34-21. Coleman played college football at Texas Tech, where he transitioned from cornerback to safety, earning All-Big 12 honors. After going undrafted in 2020, Coleman signed with the Denver Broncos and spent time on their practice squad before playing in the CFL for the Ottawa Redblacks. In 2020, he had an impressive season with 60 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and two returns for touchdowns.
The injury to Coleman was a somber moment in the game, but the positive news that he was moving his limbs was reassuring for everyone involved. The focus now is on his recovery and evaluation at the hospital.
