Divorce Attorney of Slain Woman Arrested in Connection with 2013 Homicide

More than twelve years after Aliza Sherman was fatally stabbed in downtown Cleveland, police have arrested Gregory Moore, 51, her former divorce attorney, in connection with her death. A grand jury has indicted Moore on serious charges, including one count of aggravated murder, conspiracy, six counts of murder, and two counts of kidnapping. Sherman, a 53-year-old nurse and mother of four, was killed on March 24, 2013, while waiting outside Moore’s office.

At the time of the murder, security footage showed a hooded figure fleeing the scene, but the suspect was never identified until now. The case remained cold until the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations took it on in 2021, following media attention from an NBC “Dateline” episode featuring interviews with Sherman’s daughter, Jennifer.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley stated that extensive investigative work led to clear evidence implicating Moore in orchestrating the murder. The indictment reveals that Moore contacted Sherman the day she died, instructing her to meet him at his office and requesting updates before and after the attack. He allegedly sent texts and calls to create a false narrative of ignorance regarding the assault.

The indictment further suggests that Moore killed Sherman to obstruct her upcoming divorce trial, set for the following day. At the time of the murder, he was already under investigation for sending bomb threats to the courthouse to avoid court appearances related to other trials. Moore had previously pleaded guilty in 2017 to charges connected to those bomb threats and providing misleading information during the investigation of Sherman’s murder. He is expected to be arraigned at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center soon.
