Seven candidates running for mayor of Mobile have collectively raised over $800,000 four months before the upcoming municipal elections. Former District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis and Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson have received over 71% of the total funds raised, making them the top two fundraising candidates. The race for Mobile’s top office is expected to be the most competitive and expensive municipal election in Alabama so far.
Cheriogatis leads in funds raised with $384,446.88, while Hudson has raised $198,730. Individual donors make up the majority of contributions for both candidates, with Cheriogatis receiving 35% from groups and corporations, and Hudson receiving 27.6% from PACs. Other candidates who have raised funds include Lawrence Battiste, Barbara Drummond, Jermaine Burrell, and Paul Prine.
Burrell is the third-highest fundraising candidate with $96,431 in contributions and a $25,000 loan to his campaign. Drummond, Prine, Battiste, and Woodard have also raised varying amounts for their campaigns. These candidates will be competing to succeed three-term Mayor Sandy Stimpson, who is not seeking re-election. The next mayor will receive a state-high salary of $195,000 as per a recent change in legislation.
Municipal elections are scheduled for August 26 in most Alabama cities, with campaign finance data showing fundraising activities in 42 cities. The pre-election fundraising figures indicate strong competition and financial support for the candidates vying for the mayoral position in Mobile.
