Deadline Approaching for Comments on Oil and Gas Leases in Conecuh National Forest, Alabama

Press Release

Public Comment Period Ends for Oil and Gas Leasing in Conecuh National Forest

As the public comment period concludes on Monday, August 11, residents of Alabama have a final opportunity to voice their concerns regarding the future oil and gas leasing framework within the Conecuh National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have characterized the proposed policy update as a continuation of existing practices, which have led to minimal oil and gas extraction in this ecologically diverse area.

Covering approximately 85,000 acres near the Florida Panhandle, the Conecuh National Forest serves as vital habitat for threatened species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, eastern indigo snake, and gopher tortoise. Currently, over 81,000 acres are designated for potential leasing, with only 1,000 acres actively leased for oil and gas extraction.

While documents released by the Forest Service indicate minor industry interest, a 2021 Bureau of Land Management report highlighted the low development potential in the area, estimating that only 11 new wells could be drilled over the next 15 years, affecting 16 to 44 acres. Critics express concern that the current policies, along with the prospect of new extraction technologies like fracking, may inadequately protect this ecologically rich region.

One proposal under review would analyze around 2,900 acres of private lands within the forest for potential future development. Although Forest Service decisions on oil and gas leasing for these lands remain undecided, it raises alarms about possible expansions that could disrupt sensitive habitats.

The public can submit comments online prior to the deadline, and previously submitted opinions are accessible in an online reading room. After the comment period closes, a decision is expected in December 2025, with implementation slated for February 2026.
